Dear ISA:

I get a lot of great insurance related inquiries emailed to me each day. I thought I would post a few of them here in case your clients had similar questions. Hopefully you will find some useful info below, and please be sure to email me at Kina@isaBrokers.com to get your question published in our next Q&A blog.

Q: My family is traveling to Canada for the Holidays, and we want to get travel medical insurance. However, my 62 year old dad recently had a heart attack. The doctor says he is OK to travel, but we are worried that we won’t be able to get insurance for him because of his a pre-existing condition. Is there anything out there that can help him? ~ Charlotte from IN.

A: Hi Charlotte, sorry to hear about your dad. Thankfully though, we do have a plan that will cover him. With the Atlas international Plan, acute onset of a Pre-existing condition is covered for clients under age 70 for up to $15,000.00 and up to $25,000.00 for emergency medical evacuation.

Q: We are going to Italy next month. Since Italy has socialized health care, do I need to purchase travel medical insurance? ~ Larry, Olympia WA.

A: Great question Larry. While countries like Italy do provide socialized health care for their citizens, people who are just visiting are not entitled to their free health care system. It would be a wise choice to go ahead and purchase travel medical insurance.

Q: My mother and I are taking a cruise. She is 70 and I see that most plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions if you’re 70. She is on Medicare, but I heard that doesn’t cover overseas. What do you recommend? ~ Amber in KY

A: You are correct about Medicare not covering outside of the United States, Amber. Your mother would be an excellent candidate for the TravelGap Excursion Plan, which covers pre-existing conditions up to age 84.

Q: My son is studying abroad in Spain next summer; does your insurance cover moped or motorcycle riding? ~ Carmen from Tulsa

A: Sounds like your son is in for quite an adventure. As long as he will be riding his cycle as a means of transportation, I recommend the Atlas Travel Plan, since that type of coverage is already included with the plan at no additional cost.

Q: I’m taking a large group down to Mexico and want to insure them for accidents, what plan do you recommend and can I enroll everyone at the same time or do they have to apply individually?~ Marco, AZ

A: Well Marco, we have a plan called the Day Tripper that would be perfect for your group. You can upload your group’s information onto a spreadsheet and avoid having to do lots of extra paperwork. Plus, you will get a much lower group rate, beginning at around 95 cents a day!

Q: If I buy one of these plans and need help, how can I reach you from out of the country? What if it is an emergency and there is no one available because of the time difference? ~ Tom, Chicago

A: Never fear, Tom, our plans come with a 24 hour worldwide assistance telephone number, which you can call collect. You will find that number on your policy ID card, and it is not only for emergencies; we can help you find a doctor, arrange evacuation, lost baggage, and travel assistance.

Q: My clients who own a company that sends employees to China multiple times a year, what plan do you recommend? ~ Dave from California

A: Have you heard about the versatile new Atlas Corp plan, Dave? This unique new plan is great for companies who send multiple employees overseas at different times. This plan gives you 500 days of travel medical coverage, which you can distribute among all the travelers in the group. Give us a call at 800.647.4589 for more details.
